PAICV activists accuse the political leadership in Brava of causing internal divisions, and municipal council members threaten to reject the 2027 budget

Nova Sintra, October 7, 2026 (Bravanews) — Members of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) and some municipal councilors elected from the party’s caucus in the Brava Municipal Assembly are expressing dissatisfaction with the way the party’s current political leadership in the municipality is handling proposals for the appointment of individuals to leadership positions on the island.

PAICV activists accuse the political leadership in Brava of causing internal divisions, and municipal council members threaten to reject the 2027 budget

In a message sent to Bravanews, on condition of anonymity, party members claim that the process of selecting and nominating candidates for certain public offices is causing internal disagreements and fostering a sense of division among sectors of the party.

According to these same party members, the controversy is not only related to the names that have been put forward, but also to the criteria and the way in which decisions are being made. They claim that some party members feel excluded from the process and believe there should be greater internal dialogue before proposals are presented.

Critics specifically accuse the current chair of the PAICV Political Commission in Brava of contributing to a growing rift within the local party structure. Bravanews has not yet been able to obtain a response from the political leadership in question regarding the accusations made by party members.

According to the same sources, the tension could extend beyond the party’s internal structures and ultimately affect the functioning of the Brava City Council, which is led by the PAICV. According to the whistleblowers, some municipal council members are considering taking a more critical and radical stance in future votes.

Among the possibilities mentioned is the threat by some council members not to support the City Council’s Budget and Activity Plan for 2027, unless the disagreements are resolved and changes are made to the way certain appointment processes are being conducted. However, this is a position attributed by party activists to the individuals involved and has not yet been publicly confirmed by the council members in question.

The possible rejection of these municipal management instruments could turn internal disagreements into a political problem with a direct impact on the municipality’s governance. At the end of 2025, the approval of the City Council’s Budget and Activity Plan for 2026 was already at the center of the municipal political dispute, with MpD council members Samuel Varela and João Paulo Gomes da Silva voting in favor of the documents presented by the executive led by Amândio Brito.

The situation now being reported thus poses new challenges for the local leadership of the PAICV, at a time when the party governs the City Council and seeks to maintain the cohesion of its political representation. The accusations were made on condition of anonymity and, to date, do not constitute independent confirmation of the alleged internal conflicts; it remains to be seen whether there will be a formal response from the Political Commission or the municipal representatives involved.
